A traffic officer was sitting in his patrol car beside the motorway when he noticed a car crawling along at about 22 kilometres an hour. "That's dangerous," he thought. "Driving that slowly can cause an accident." So he turned on his lights and pulled the car over.
Inside were four elderly women. The driver wound down her window and smiled sweetly. "Is something wrong, officer? I was driving at exactly the speed limit."
"Ma'am," said the officer, "the speed limit here is a hundred."
"No, no," said the woman, pointing at a sign. "It says twenty-two. Look!"
The officer tried not to laugh. "That's not the speed limit, ma'am. That's the number of the road. This is State Highway 22."
"Oh dear!" said the driver, blushing. "How silly of me. Thank you, officer."
As he was about to leave, the officer looked into the back seat. The other three women were as white as sheets, gripping the seats and staring straight ahead without blinking.
"Excuse me," he said. "Are your friends all right? They look terrified."
"Oh, they'll be fine in a minute," said the driver. "We've just come off Highway 119."
