LOL
A woman's mother had just bought her first smartphone, and she was very proud of it. She had learned to make calls, take photos and – most excitingly – send text messages.
One afternoon, the daughter's phone buzzed. It was a message from her mum:
"Your Great-Aunt Margaret passed away this morning. LOL."
The daughter stared at the screen in shock. She phoned her mother straight away.
"Mum! Why on earth would you write 'LOL'?"
"What do you mean?" said her mother. "It means 'lots of love'. Isn't that right?"
"No, Mum," said the daughter. "It means 'laugh out loud'."
There was a long pause.
"Oh no," said her mother. "I have to call everyone I've sent it to."
ある女性の母親が、生まれて初めてスマートフォンを買って、たいそう自慢にしていました。電話のかけ方も、写真の撮り方も、そして何よりうれしいことに、メッセージの送り方も覚えたのです。
ある日の午後、娘の携帯がぶるっと震えました。母親からのメッセージです。
「マーガレット大おばさんが、今朝亡くなりました。LOL」
娘はぼうぜんと画面を見つめ、すぐに母親に電話をかけました。
「お母さん！ なんで『LOL』なんて書いたの？」
「どういうこと？」と母親は言いました。「『lots of love（愛をこめて）』っていう意味でしょう？」
「違うのよ、お母さん」と娘は言いました。「『laugh out loud（大笑い）』っていう意味なの」
長い沈黙がありました。
「まあ、どうしましょう」と母親は言いました。「送った人、全員に電話しなくちゃ」
