しゃべる犬、売ります
A man saw a sign outside a farmhouse: "Talking Dog for Sale." Curious, he knocked on the door, and the farmer told him the dog was in the back garden.
The man found a scruffy old Labrador lying on the grass. "Er… can you really talk?" he asked, feeling a bit silly.
"Yep," said the dog.
The man nearly fell over. "So… what's your story?"
The dog sat up. "Well, I discovered I could talk when I was very young. I wanted to help my country, so I told the government. They had me working for the secret service in no time. I'd sit in rooms with spies and world leaders, and nobody suspected that a dog was listening. I was one of the most valuable spies in the world for eight years.
"But all that travelling really tired me out, so I retired and took a job at the airport, sniffing out suspicious characters. I uncovered some huge smuggling operations and was awarded a whole lot of medals. Then I got married, had a few puppies, and now I'm just enjoying my retirement."
The man was amazed. He went back to the farmer. "How much do you want for the dog?"
"Ten dollars," said the farmer.
"Ten dollars? That dog is incredible! Why on earth are you selling him so cheaply?"
The farmer shrugged. "Because he's a liar. He never did any of that stuff."
ある男が、農家の前に立っている看板に目をとめました。「しゃべる犬、売ります」興味をひかれた男が戸をたたくと、農場主は、犬なら裏庭にいると言いました。
男が行ってみると、芝生の上に、毛のぼさぼさした年寄りのラブラドールが寝そべっていました。「ええと……きみ、本当にしゃべれるの？」と男は少し気恥ずかしく思いながら聞きました。
「ああ」と犬は言いました。
男はひっくり返りそうになりました。「じゃ、じゃあ……どんな人生を送ってきたんだい？」
犬は体を起こしました。「そうだな、しゃべれるって気づいたのは、ほんの子犬のころさ。国の役に立ちたくて、政府に知らせたんだ。そうしたら、あっという間に情報機関で働くことになってね。スパイや各国の首脳がいる部屋に座っていても、まさか犬が聞き耳を立てているなんて誰も思わない。8年間、おれは世界でもとびきり重宝されるスパイの一人だったんだ。
「でも、あちこち飛び回るのにすっかり疲れちまってね。引退して空港で働くことにした。怪しいやつをにおいでかぎ分ける仕事さ。大がかりな密輸組織をいくつも摘発して、勲章も山ほどもらったよ。それから結婚して、子犬が何匹か生まれて、今はのんびり隠居生活ってわけだ」
男はすっかり感心して、農場主のところへ戻りました。「あの犬、いくらで売ってくれますか？」
「10ドルだ」と農場主は言いました。
「10ドル？ あんなにすごい犬なのに！ いったいどうしてそんなに安いんですか？」
農場主は肩をすくめました。「うそつきだからさ。あいつ、そんなこと一つもやっちゃいないんだ」
