洪水
After days of heavy rain, the river burst its banks, and the whole town began to flood. Everyone was told to leave, but one very religious man refused to go.
"God will save me," he said. "I have faith."
As the water rose, he climbed up onto his front porch. A neighbour drove past in a four-wheel drive. "Get in!" she shouted. "The water's still rising!"
"No, thank you," said the man. "God will save me."
The water kept rising, and soon the man had to climb out of an upstairs window. A rescue team came past in a boat. "Quick, jump in!" they called.
"No, thank you," said the man. "God will save me."
Before long, the man was standing on the roof, with water swirling all around him. A helicopter flew overhead and lowered a rope. "Grab the rope!" shouted the pilot. "We'll pull you up!"
"No, thank you," the man shouted back. "God will save me!"
The water kept rising, and in the end, the man was swept away and drowned.
When he arrived in heaven, he was furious. "I had complete faith in you!" he said to God. "Why didn't you save me?"
God sighed. "I sent you a car, a boat and a helicopter. What more did you want?"
何日も大雨が続いたあと、川があふれ、町じゅうが水につかり始めました。みんなに避難の指示が出ましたが、とても信心深い一人の男だけは、どうしても逃げようとしませんでした。
「神様が救ってくださる」と男は言いました。「わたしは信じている」
水かさが増してきたので、男は玄関ポーチの屋根の上にのぼりました。近所の女性が四輪駆動車で通りかかりました。「乗って！」と彼女は叫びました。「水はまだ上がってくるわよ！」
「いいえ、けっこうです」と男は言いました。「神様が救ってくださるので」
水はさらに上がり、やがて男は二階の窓からはい出さなければならなくなりました。救助隊がボートで通りかかりました。「早く、飛び乗って！」
「いいえ、けっこうです」と男は言いました。「神様が救ってくださるので」
まもなく、男は屋根の上に立っていました。周りでは水が渦を巻いています。頭上にヘリコプターが飛んできて、ロープを下ろしました。「ロープにつかまって！」とパイロットが叫びました。「引き上げるぞ！」
「いいえ、けっこうです！」と男は叫び返しました。「神様が救ってくださるので！」
水は上がり続け、とうとう男は流されておぼれてしまいました。
天国に着いた男は、かんかんに怒っていました。「わたしはあなたを心から信じていたのに！」と男は神様に言いました。「どうして救ってくださらなかったんですか？」
神様はため息をつきました。「車と、ボートと、ヘリコプターを送ったではないか。ほかに何が欲しかったのだ？」
