宇宙飛行士、記録的な速さでISSに到着
Four astronauts have arrived at the International Space Station after the fastest American crewed flight ever made to the orbiting laboratory.
The Crew-13 mission blasted off from Cape Canaveral in Florida on the first of October, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Less than eight hours later, their Crew Dragon capsule, named Grace, docked with the station – about five hours quicker than the previous American record. The overall record, however, still belongs to a Russian Soyuz flight, which reached the station in around three hours in 2020.
The crew is commanded by NASA astronaut Jessica Watkins, who became the first NASA astronaut to fly on a Dragon spacecraft twice. She is joined by NASA pilot Luke Delaney, Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk and Russian cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov.
Despite concerns about the weather, the launch went ahead on schedule, on the same day that NASA celebrated its 68th birthday. After the rocket lifted off, its reusable first stage returned to Earth and landed back at Cape Canaveral.
The new arrivals briefly brought the number of people on board the station to eleven. They are expected to spend about six months in orbit, carrying out scientific research and maintenance work, before returning to Earth early next year.
4人の宇宙飛行士が国際宇宙ステーション（ISS）に到着した。米国の有人飛行としては、ISSまでの到達時間が史上最短となった。
「クルー13」ミッションは10月1日、スペースXのファルコン9ロケットでフロリダ州ケープカナベラルから打ち上げられた。「グレース」と名付けられたクルードラゴン宇宙船は、8時間足らずでISSにドッキングし、これまでの米国の記録を約5時間縮めた。ただ、全体の最速記録は今もロシアが持っている。2020年、ソユーズ宇宙船が約3時間でISSに到着しているのだ。
船長を務めるのはNASAのジェシカ・ワトキンス飛行士で、ドラゴンに2度搭乗した初のNASA飛行士となった。ほかにNASAのルーク・デラニー操縦士、カナダのジョシュア・クトリク飛行士、ロシアのセルゲイ・テチェリャトニコフ飛行士が搭乗している。
天候が心配されたものの、打ち上げは予定通り行われた。この日はちょうどNASAの創設68周年だった。打ち上げ後、再使用型の第1段ロケットは地上に戻り、ケープカナベラルに着陸した。
新たなクルーの到着で、ISSの滞在者は一時11人になった。4人は約6か月間軌道上にとどまって科学研究や保守作業にあたり、来年初めに地球へ帰還する予定だ。
