New Zealanders lost an hour of sleep recently as daylight saving began, with clocks moving forward one hour at 2 am on the last Sunday in September. The change means that the sun now rises and sets an hour later by the clock, giving people longer, lighter evenings. Many Kiwis welcome the extra daylight after work, using it for walks on the beach, sport, gardening and barbecues. Daylight saving will continue until the first Sunday in April, when the clocks go back again. Most smartphones and computers update automatically, but some clocks – such as those in cars, ovens and microwaves – need to be changed by hand. Officials also remind people that the start of daylight saving is a good time to check their smoke alarms and replace the batteries if necessary. Losing an hour of sleep can leave some people feeling tired and grumpy for a few days. Sleep experts suggest going to bed a little earlier in the days before the change, getting some sunshine in the morning and avoiding caffeine late in the day. Not everyone is a fan. Some farmers and parents of young children say the change disrupts their routines. In other parts of the world, there have been long debates about scrapping daylight saving altogether. For now, though, New Zealand is sticking with it.
