Four astronauts have splashed down safely in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Los Angeles, bringing an eight-month mission to a close.
The Crew-12 team – NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, European astronaut Sophie Adenot and Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev – spent 237 days in space. During that time, they circled the Earth more than 3,700 times and travelled over 100 million miles. Recovery teams reached their capsule shortly after it landed in the water.
While on board the International Space Station, the crew carried out hundreds of hours of scientific research. Their experiments included growing stem cells in space, producing medical fluids on demand and studying how certain bacteria might damage the heart.
The mission also included several spacewalks. Jessica Meir stepped outside the station four times, bringing her career total to seven. That puts her third among NASA's women for the number of spacewalks. Sophie Adenot completed three spacewalks and became the first French woman ever to work outside the station.
For Hathaway and Adenot, it was their first trip into space, while Meir and Fedyaev were making their second. After a period of medical checks, the astronauts will slowly readjust to life under Earth's gravity.
