A growing number of young people say they are worried about their mental health, according to a new report from the United States.
The survey, carried out by a large health insurance company, found that 62% of college students and young adults aged 18 to 28 were concerned about their mental or emotional wellbeing. Nearly 70% of college students said they had experienced problems such as anxiety, stress or depression. Health experts say the numbers have been rising for the past four years.
The report also revealed a gap between parents and their children. While 39% of parents believed their child felt understood after they talked, only 28% of students agreed.
Interestingly, almost a third of young people said they had turned to AI chatbots for help with their feelings – to look up symptoms, find ways to cope, or simply to have someone to talk to. Experts say technology can be useful, but it should not replace real conversations with friends, family or trained professionals.
Common sources of pressure for students include exams, heavy workloads, worries about money and uncertainty about the future. Experts suggest keeping a regular sleep routine, staying active, breaking big tasks into smaller steps and, most importantly, talking to someone. Most schools and universities offer free counselling services for students who are struggling.
