Studying overseas is exciting, but it also involves some important rules and responsibilities. Understanding them from the start will help your time abroad go smoothly.
Attendance
Your student visa allows you to be in the country in order to study. Colleges must keep records of your attendance, and if you regularly miss classes, they may have to report it to immigration authorities. Pathway programmes in particular require a very high level of commitment. If you are sick, tell your college and get a medical certificate.
Working while you study
In New Zealand, full-time international students on a student visa may be allowed to work part-time during the semester, often up to 25 hours a week, and full-time during scheduled holidays. However, this depends on your programme, its length and the conditions on your visa, and the rules can change. Always check your visa conditions or the official immigration website before you start a job.
A part-time job can help with living costs and give you real-life English practice, but don't let it take over. Your studies must come first.
Tuition fees and living costs
International students pay much higher tuition fees than local students. An English course might cost several hundred dollars a week, while a diploma or degree can cost many thousands of dollars a year. On top of this, you need to budget for rent, food, transport, phone and internet, insurance, books and entertainment. Make a monthly budget and stick to it.
Where to live
Many new students choose a homestay, living with a local family who provides a room and meals. It's a great way to practise English every day and learn about local culture. Others prefer a student hostel or dormitory, or sharing a flat with friends. Whatever you choose, read your agreement carefully before you sign it.
Staying healthy and happy
Get enough sleep, eat well and stay active. Join a club, try a new sport or explore the beaches, forests and mountains on the weekend. And keep in touch with family and friends back home – but also make an effort to build a new circle of friends where you are now.
Remember, your time as a student will pass quickly. Make the most of every opportunity.
