Scientists are still studying exactly how fish "sleep". Fish don't sleep in the same way that land mammals do, but most fish do rest. Research shows that fish can slow down their activity and metabolism while still staying alert to danger. Some fish float in one place. Some wedge themselves into a safe spot in the mud or among coral, and some even find a suitable nest. The Pacific sand lance, for example, burrows into the sand to rest, save energy and hide from predators. These periods of rest may do the same job for fish that sleep does for people, helping their bodies recover.
