A hare was always boasting about how fast he could run. "Nobody can beat me," he told the other animals. "I'm the fastest creature in the whole forest." The tortoise, who was tired of hearing this, said quietly, "I'll race you." The hare burst out laughing. "You? You're the slowest animal I've ever met!" "Then you've got nothing to worry about," said the tortoise. The animals marked out a course, and the race began. The hare shot off and was soon far ahead. When he looked back, the tortoise was just a dot in the distance. "This is too easy," he thought. "I've got time for a quick nap." So he lay down in the shade of a tree and closed his eyes. Meanwhile, the tortoise kept going. He didn't hurry, and he didn't stop. Step by step, he plodded past the sleeping hare and on towards the finish line. When the hare finally woke up, the sun was low in the sky. He jumped to his feet and ran as fast as he could, but it was too late. The tortoise was already crossing the finish line, and all the animals were cheering. Slow and steady wins the race.
