Artificial intelligence is reshaping people's jobs rather than simply replacing them – at least for now, according to a major new workplace report.
The software company Workday surveyed around 6,000 employees and business leaders and analysed hiring data from hundreds of employers. Only 28% of business leaders said they expected AI to reduce the number of people they employ. A larger group, 40%, said they hoped it would help them get more out of their existing staff.
The kinds of skills employers want are shifting quickly. Demand for basic AI knowledge has actually fallen, as it becomes something everyone is expected to have. At the same time, demand for practical skills – such as building AI tools and automating everyday tasks – has jumped by more than 50% in less than a year.
Workers who use AI most heavily have mixed feelings. Most of them believe it will make some of their current skills less valuable, but even more think it will open up new career opportunities.
There is a gap, however. While 79% of workers say they know which skills they need, only 66% say their employer is helping them develop those skills.
The job market is also becoming more crowded. Most job seekers now use AI to help with their applications, and the average number of applicants for each job has risen sharply.
