Travellers who can currently visit Europe without a visa will soon need to apply for a new travel permit before they set off.
The scheme, called ETIAS, is expected to start in the final months of 2026. It will apply to visitors from around 60 visa-free countries – including New Zealand, Australia, the United States, Japan and Taiwan – who are travelling to most European Union countries for short trips.
Applying should be quick and simple. Travellers fill in an online form with their personal details, passport information and travel plans, then pay a small one-off fee. Most applications are expected to be approved within minutes. Once approved, the permit is linked electronically to the traveller's passport, so there is nothing to print. It will be valid for three years, or until the passport expires.
ETIAS is not the only change. Since April, Europe's new Entry/Exit System has been fully up and running. Instead of stamping passports, border officers now record visitors' fingerprints and take a photo when they enter and leave the area.
Officials are warning travellers to be careful online. A number of unofficial websites offer to help people apply, but they often charge extra fees and may misuse personal information. Travellers are advised to use only the official ETIAS website or app.
