Almost every electronic product comes with a manufacturer's warranty, usually one or two years. But what does a warranty actually cover, and what should you do if something goes wrong? What is covered? A warranty covers faults in materials or workmanship – in other words, problems that are not your fault. If your laptop screen suddenly stops working after a few months of normal use, that is likely to be covered. A cracked screen after you dropped it, or a phone damaged by water, is usually not covered. What will happen? If your product develops a fault during the warranty period, the store will usually test it first. If the fault is confirmed, the product may be repaired, replaced or refunded. Most warranties are "return to base", which means you need to bring or send the product to the store or service centre. You will usually have to pay the cost of sending it in. Your rights under the law In New Zealand, the Consumer Guarantees Act gives you rights that a store's own policy cannot take away. Products must be of acceptable quality: they should be safe, last a reasonable amount of time and do what they are supposed to do. This means you may still have rights after the manufacturer's warranty has ended. For example, an expensive television that stops working after 18 months may still be covered, because most people would expect it to last longer than that. Tips for a smooth warranty claim - Keep your receipt or proof of purchase in a safe place. A photo of it on your phone is a good idea. - Register your product with the manufacturer if you can. - Back up your data before handing in a laptop, phone or hard drive. Repairs can sometimes erase your files. - Remove any passwords or screen locks, or give the technician a way to test the device. - Describe the problem clearly: what happens, when it started and what you have already tried. A good warranty gives you peace of mind, but the best protection is still to look after your devices and keep your paperwork.
