Mermaids, the half-human, half-fish creatures of the sea, have appeared in the stories of seafaring cultures since ancient times. The ancient Greek poet Homer wrote about singing sea creatures that lured sailors in The Odyssey. In ancient East Asian legends, mermaids were the wives of powerful sea dragons and carried messages between their husbands and the emperors on land. Aboriginal people in parts of Australia tell of water spirits called yawkyawks.
Belief in mermaids may go back to the very beginning of human history. Magical female figures first appear in cave paintings from the late Stone Age, around 30,000 years ago, when modern humans spread across the land and probably began to sail the seas. Myths around the world are also full of other half-human creatures, such as wise centaurs, wild satyrs and terrifying minotaurs.
So, are mermaids real? No evidence of sea-dwelling humanoids has ever been found. Why, then, do mermaids appear in the stories of almost every seafaring people? That's a question best left to historians, philosophers and anthropologists.
