Penguins are birds, so they do have wings. But a penguin's wings have evolved for swimming rather than flying. Underwater, penguins can reach speeds of 15 to 25 miles (about 24 to 40 kilometers) per hour.
Because they are such good swimmers, penguins spend a lot of time in the water. Some spend up to 75 percent of their lives there. Like other birds, however, penguins lay eggs, and they raise their chicks on land.
In Antarctica, groups of gentoo penguins can often be seen walking along well-worn paths between the sea, where they feed, and the places where they nest.
