There was once a little girl who was loved by everyone, but most of all by her grandmother. Her grandmother gave her a little cap made of red velvet, and the girl liked it so much that she wore it all the time. So everyone called her Little Red Riding Hood.
One day, her mother said, "Your grandmother isn't well. Take her this cake and this bottle of juice. Go straight there, stay on the path and don't talk to strangers."
Grandmother lived in a cottage in the woods, about half an hour's walk from the village. Little Red Riding Hood had only just entered the woods when she met a wolf. She didn't know what a wicked animal he was, so she wasn't afraid.
"Good morning, Little Red Riding Hood," said the wolf. "Where are you going?"
"To my grandmother's house. She's ill, and I'm taking her some cake."
"And where does your grandmother live?"
"Further into the woods, under the three big oak trees," she said.
The wolf thought, "That old woman would make a good meal, and this girl would be an even tastier one." So he said, "Look at all these lovely flowers! Why don't you pick some for your grandmother?"
Little Red Riding Hood thought that was a good idea. She left the path and went deeper and deeper into the woods, picking flowers. Meanwhile, the wolf ran straight to Grandmother's house, knocked on the door and, pretending to be the girl, was let in. He swallowed the old woman in one gulp. Then he put on her nightcap, climbed into her bed and pulled the curtains.
When Little Red Riding Hood arrived, the door was open, and she felt strangely uneasy. She went over to the bed.
"Oh, Grandmother, what big ears you have!"
"All the better to hear you with."
"Oh, Grandmother, what big eyes you have!"
"All the better to see you with."
"Oh, Grandmother, what big hands you have!"
"All the better to hug you with."
"But Grandmother, what a terribly big mouth you have!"
"All the better to eat you with!" And with that, the wolf jumped out of bed and swallowed Little Red Riding Hood too.
Feeling full, he lay down again and fell asleep, snoring loudly. A huntsman was passing the house and thought, "The old woman is snoring very loudly. I'd better check that she's all right." He went in and found the wolf in the bed. Instead of shooting him, he took a pair of scissors and carefully cut open the wolf's stomach. Out jumped Little Red Riding Hood, and then out came her grandmother, still alive.
They filled the wolf's stomach with heavy stones. When he woke up and tried to run away, the stones were so heavy that he fell down dead.
The huntsman took the wolf's skin home. Grandmother ate the cake and drank the juice and soon felt better. And Little Red Riding Hood said to herself, "As long as I live, I'll never leave the path again when my mother has told me not to."
