Applying to study overseas can feel confusing, but if you take it one step at a time, it's quite straightforward. Here is what usually happens. Step 1: Choose your programme Look through the college prospectus or website and decide what you want to study. Check the entry requirements, the length of the programme, the start dates and the tuition fees. Many programmes have three or four intakes a year, so you don't always have to wait until the start of the year. Step 2: Prepare your documents You will normally need: - A copy of your passport - Your academic transcripts and certificates, translated into English if necessary - Proof of your English level, such as an IELTS or TOEFL score report - A CV, if you have work experience - A personal statement explaining why you want to study the programme Step 3: Submit your application Fill in the online application form and upload your documents. Make sure your name is spelt exactly as it appears in your passport. Many students apply through an education agent, but you can also apply directly. Step 4: Receive your offer If your application is successful, you will receive an offer of place. An unconditional offer means you have met all the requirements. A conditional offer means you still need to do something – for example, improve your IELTS score or send your final results. Step 5: Accept and pay To accept your offer, sign the acceptance form and pay the tuition fees. You will then receive a receipt, which you need for your visa application. International students must also have medical and travel insurance for the whole time they are studying. Step 6: Apply for your student visa Apply for a student visa as early as possible, because it can take several weeks to process. You may need to show that you have enough money to support yourself, and you may need a medical check. Step 7: Arrange accommodation and travel Many colleges can help you find a homestay with a local family or a room in a student hostel. Book your flight, and plan to arrive a few days before orientation so you have time to settle in.
