Despite their scary reputation, sharks very rarely attack humans. They would much rather eat fish and marine mammals. Of the more than 300 species of sharks, only about a dozen have ever been involved in attacks on people. Sharks evolved millions of years before humans existed, so humans are not part of their normal diet. Sharks will eat whatever is available, but most feed mainly on smaller fish and invertebrates. Some of the larger species hunt seals, sea lions and other marine mammals. Sharks sometimes attack humans when they are confused or curious. If a shark sees a person splashing in the water, it may come closer to investigate, which can lead to an accidental bite. In fact, sharks have much more to fear from us than we do from them. People hunt sharks for their meat, organs, skin and fins, which are used to make products such as shark fin soup, oils and leather. Sharks play an important role in ocean ecosystems, but overfishing is threatening some shark populations. Scientists are studying where sharks live, how they migrate and how their numbers are changing, to find the best ways to protect them.
