BitVocab ("the Service", operated by an individual developer) respects and protects your privacy. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the rights you have. By using the Service, you agree to the terms of this policy.

1. Information We Collect

To provide our English vocabulary learning service, we collect only the information necessary:

• Account information: When you register an account, we collect the username and password you set. Passwords are always stored hashed; we cannot and will not recover your plaintext password.
• Google sign-in information: When you choose to sign in with your Google account, we obtain your email address and basic profile information (such as display name) through Google. We never obtain your Google password.
• Learning data: Including words you mark as mastered, word lists you create, and your learning progress and records, used to save your learning state.
• Analytics data: Anonymous browsing behavior and device information collected via Google Analytics (see Section 4).

We do not collect your real name, address, phone number, payment information, or precise location.

2. How We Use Information

The information we collect is used solely to: provide and maintain learning features, save your learning progress, and improve service quality. We never sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes, nor use it for advertising.

3. Browser Local Storage

The Service uses your browser's local storage (localStorage) to save your login state and language preference. This data is stored only on your device, is not automatically transmitted to our servers, and is not used to track you. This is functional storage essential to the operation of the Service.

4. Google Analytics and Cookies

With your consent, the Service uses Google Analytics to analyze site traffic and help us improve. Google Analytics writes cookies to your browser and collects anonymous statistics such as your IP address, pages visited, and device and browser type, which are sent to Google.

On your first visit, we display a notice at the bottom of the page where you may freely choose to accept or decline. If you decline, Google Analytics will not be loaded, and this does not affect any features such as searching, studying, or signing in. You may reset your choice at any time by clearing your browser data.

5. Data Retention and Security

We take reasonable technical measures to protect your data. Passwords are stored hashed, and transmission uses encrypted connections. Your learning data is retained until you delete your account or request its removal.

9. Browser Extension (BitVocab Highlighter)

This section covers our Chrome extension "BitVocab Highlighter", in addition to the website terms above.

• Reading page text: To highlight words, the extension reads the visible text of the page you are viewing. This happens locally in your browser, only when you click "Highlight", and the page text is never sent to our servers or any third party.
• Running on web pages: The extension can run on any website you choose to highlight, because users read English on arbitrary sites. It does not act automatically in the background and does not collect or transmit page content.
• Login: Logging in (by password or Google) obtains an authentication token from bitvocab.com so the extension can load your personal mastered-words list. Login is optional but required for the "unknown words only" feature.
• Local storage: Your dictionary, mastered-words list, and preferences (language, colors, filters) are cached locally in your browser (IndexedDB / extension storage) for performance, and are removed when you log out or uninstall the extension.
• Network: The only servers the extension contacts are bitvocab.com (for login, dictionary/mastered-words sync, and pronunciation audio) and Google's standard sign-in service.
• We do not sell your data, use it for advertising, or track your browsing history.
